How to manage data security & privacy in modern smart cities?

Join us for M-Sec’s 3rd Webinar focused on how the M-Sec solution can help manage data security and privacy in modern smart cities through cloud systems

How to manage data security and privacy in modern smart cities? Through public cloud versus private cloud.

This will be the main focus of M-Sec’s 3rd Webinar of a series of Webinars that intend to showcase the project’s results, after two years of intensive research on how the M-Sec architecture could better solve cyber-security challenges in hyper-connected smart cities, and it will be dedicated to the cloud layer of the M-Sec solution.

What is the importance of the cloud layer in the scope of the M-Sec solution? According to Vanessa Clemente Nunez, Business Developer & Project Manager at Worldline (WLI), and Aamir Bokhari, M-Sec Lead Researcher at Yokohama National University (YNU), “This layer, as the name suggests, is the layer that includes the entire infrastructure upon which cloud services are based. These services are designed to provide easy, affordable access to applications and resources, without the need for internal infrastructure or hardware”. Therefore, the “M-Sec provides a secured Cloud layer to accept, store and process data for analysis and decision making. This layer also enables creation of live dashboards which decision makers can monitor and take proactive data driven decisions”.

In what way improvements in the cloud layer of the M-Sec solution will improve peoples’ lives in hyper-connected smart cities? For Vanessa Clemente Nunez and Aamir Bokhari, “After securely transferring data throughout the network, one of the challenges is to secure the data at the cloud. Thanks to M-Sec, the possibility to interlink the offshore and the onshore storage is possible. First, sensitive data is encrypted with an asymmetric public/private key pair. The data can only be accessed by the owner who has to be authenticated, and the authorised operators allowed by the owner. Afterwards, a hash is generated and stored in the blockchain for data tamper proof reasons. In parallel, at cloud level, it is possible to stay vigilant and monitor threats to the IoT devices layer with our Monitoring & visualization tool, a software-based solution that collects and examines activity from the IoT”.

In this engaging Webinar, our experts Francisco J. Hermoso, Full Stack Engineer at WLI, and Aamir Bokhari, from YNU, will present fact-based objective information on the cloud and data level security layer being developed for 2 smart cities – Santander and Fujisawa – in the scope of the M-Sec project, the problems they are facing and how they will try to overcome them.

What were the major challenges and future developments regarding the cloud layer of the M-Sec solution? For Vanessa Clemente Nunez and Aamir Bokhari, the major challenge in this layer is the “interconnection between the offshore and the onshore data store. In M-Sec Project, we follow the aforementioned approach to data related to Blockchain. No actual data is stored within smart contracts or transactions. In contrast, all data are accessible through external data sources (for example open access data about weather conditions) or stored in external databases and kept off-chain and merely linked to the ledger through a hash-pointer. This way we take into consideration the case of the “erasure of personal data” or “the right to be forgotten” since data could be erased in external storage and the pointer no longer points to them”. Therefore, the cloud layer will “test innovative methods to increase its security by preventing threats to the IoT devices layer from anywhere in the cloud and providing a secure storage where all sensitive data is encrypted and access control implemented to cope functional and non-functional requirements raised by new demands for secured hyper-connected smart city services”.

The Webinar entitled “Managing data security and privacy in smart cities through cloud systems” will be held on the 18th of November, between 09:00am and 10:30am CET (Brussels Time), free of charge, through the following link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83753032939

Your opinion matters! Our experts would like to introduce the state of art on cloud systems for hyper-connected smart city services. They are thus seeking feedback from different stakeholders and future collaboration with them to continue on its development.
